Mr. Matthew Vala

JH and HS Chorus and Elementary Music

Matthew Vala leads the Calvary Academy Music Department, is director of Calvary Academy Music Institute and director of the Choral Education program. Mr. Vala graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, studying under Dr. Lynn Eustis. He began teaching at Calvary Academy in 2007. While he is a teacher at Calvary, Mr. Vala is also prominent in the theatre community in Springfield. Being both on and off stage, Mr. Vala performs and directs with the Gordon Productions, the Hoogland Center for the Arts, the Springfield Muni Opera and the Springfield Theatre Centre. He directed the Hoogland’s sell-out production of “Grease” and The Springfield Muni’s “Wizard of Oz” in the summer of 2011.
The Calvary Academy Music Institute offers private music lessons to students in voice, piano, instrumental and guitar. Mrs. Brittany Welk

Mrs. Brittany Welk

Athletic Director and Health Teacher

Mrs. Welk teaches Health, and serves as Athletic Director at Calvary Academy. She is also the Head Varsity Girls Basketball coach and serves as the Athletic Director. Mrs. Welk received her Bachelor’s Degree in Christian Education from Lincoln Christian University, and she is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Phoenix. Mrs. Welk began teaching at Calvary in the fall of 2004. She is married to Douglas who is also a member of the Calvary Academy staff. Mrs. Welk played basketball and soccer at Lincoln Christian University. She has a passion for using athletics as an avenue to teach people about the Lord and is thankful for the opportunity to work in a place that combines faith with education and athletics.

Mr. Doug Welk

Mr. Doug Welk

HS History and JH Bible

Mr. Douglas Welk is a graduate of Rochester High School. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois-Springfield in May of 2002. After working for an advertising company in Chicago, IL, Doug felt the call towards ministry and moved back home. Upon returning home, Doug enrolled at Lincoln Christian Seminary and received his Master of Divinity in General Bible Studies in May of 2007. During his time at seminary, Doug met and married Brittany (Robbins) Welk, who is also employed at Calvary Academy. He teaches Civics, World History, American History, 8th Grade Bible, and High School Bible.

Mr. Dan Wetter

Mr. Dan Wetter

Computers

Mr. Dan Wetter is the computer teacher at Calvary Academy. He graduated from Evangel in 2000 with a major in elementary education and a minor in physical education. He taught 4th grade from 2000-2007, facilitated science from 2007-2009, and has taught computer since 2007. He played high school basketball and baseball at O'Fallon Township High School. Mr. Wetter earned a baseball scholarship to pitch at Evangel University. During his collegiate career, Mr. Wetter was the Freshman of the Year and Honorable Mention All-Conference. During his sophomore season, he had a 9-1 record with a 1.87 ERA. Mr. Wetter was the Conference Pitcher of the Year, 1st Team All-Conference, and Honorable Mention All-American. Mr. Wetter coaches junior high baseball.

Mrs. Shannon Wetter

Mrs. Shannon Wetter

HS Math

Mrs. Shannon (Squires) Wetter is a graduate of Calvary Academy. She earned an A.A. degree from SCI. In 1998 she graduated summa cum laude from Evangel with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics. In the fall of 1998 she married Dan Wetter and moved to Springfield, Missouri. Her first teaching position was at Marionville High School in Missouri. In 1999, Dan and Shannon moved back to Illinois, and Shannon began teaching high school math at Calvary Academy in the fall of 1999. She teaches Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Calculus, Advanced Math, and Geometry for High School.
